PHF Graduate Research Assistantship

Call for Applications, 2010–2011
Topic: Virtuality

Application Deadline: March 15, 2010

The Penn Humanities Forum announces a Graduate Research Assistantship for the 2010–11 academic year for a University of Pennsylvania dissertation-level (ABD) student in the humanities whose thesis pertains to Virtuality, the Forum's research topic for the year.

The Penn Humanities Forum Graduate Research Assistantship provides full support for the 2010–11 academic year (tuition plus a stipend of approx. $19,200), and carries with it membership in the Forum's weekly Faculty Mellon Research Seminar. Applicants may not be holding other positions (e.g., teaching) and must be in good academic and financial standing with the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

The position requires 15–20 hours per week of service in a variety of functions:
1. student leader of the Graduate Humanities Forum, working in association with the GHF Faculty Advisor to organize GHF seminars and special colloquia;
2. chair and coordinator of the annual GHF spring conference, planning, organizing, and presiding over the event;
3. assistant to PHF's administrative staff, Jennifer Conway and Sara Varney, helping to carry out the general business of the Forum (requires some evenings and, rarely, weekend work).

The RAship is awarded competitively. Semi-finalists are interviewed on campus in March/April as part of the selection process, and will also be considered for a $1000 Mellon Graduate Fellowship.

Please submit the following:
1. Cover letter expressing interest in the RAship.
2. Project title, 125-word (max.) abstract, and proposal (500 words) describing the research to be carried out during the year and its relation to PHF's 2010–2011 theme, Virtuality.
3. Curriculum vitae.
4. Transcript of courses.
5. One confidential letter of recommendation from either your dissertation director or your graduate chair, which referee should email directly to Jennifer Conway no later than March 15, 2010.

Please email all application materials to Jennifer Conway, Associate Director, Penn Humanities Forum.
