The Modern Mambabatok: Lane Wilcken and Filipino Tattooing in the Diaspora

Dir. Kayla Sotomil, 2020, 30 min.

After nearing extinction, the ancient Filipino practice of hand-tap tattooing is experiencing a resurgence. Follow Lane Wilcken as he travels across the United States engaging with the Filipino diasporic community as a mambabatok, a cultural tattoo practitioner that uses ancient techniques involving ritual, chants, food offerings, and prayers, while helping to reconnect Filipinos with their cultural heritage.

Followed by remarks by filmmaker Kayla Sotomil and Filipino folklorist Margaret Magat.

Presented by the Penn Museum and cosponsored by the Asian American Studies Program, the Cinema and Media Studies Program, Penn Libraries, the Wolf Humanities Center, and the Philadelphia Folklore Project.
